Spotting the signs of penetrating damp
Presence of damp tends to be confirmed by certain common signs. It is hard to differentiate between the signs of raising damp and penetrating damp. Even when certain indicators such as musty smell and presence of mold persists, you can consider other factors such as the weather conditions and structural factors to isolate penetrating damp cases. You can also closely examine the involved patterns. Basically, penetrating damp is caused by water coming from other directions of the building other than the ground. Water from the ground triggers rising damp as the name suggests. Here are the signs you need to look out for penetrating damp.
Damp patches on Walls
It is quite easy to differentiate a dumpy and a dry wall. The same case applies to the floor or ceiling. That is because the leakage present will not be able to wet the entire ceiling, wall or floor structure unless for the case of flooding. If you observe some spots of damp on the ceiling, then you should look deeper into it. These damp patches often worsen or darken during the rainy season. Basically, penetrating water will only pass through certain weak points such as cracks and fail to penetrate in sealed areas. That explains why you should be looking specifically for patches.
Dumpy suspended floors
Raising damp can be seen on the ground floors. That is because the ground water is just centimeters away and can easily percolate upwards. When you observe dumpy upper floors, then you are not dealing with raising damp any more. This is a more serious issue of penetrating damp. The water must be coming from the floor sides or leaking from within the upper floor.
Damp due to driving rain
Driving rain usually comes down inclined. The inclination means that it can reach the walls to a great extent making them completely wet. Strong and well-sealed walls will have no problem withstanding the wet conditions. However, those that are weak will at some point give up creating way for moisture to creep in. from inside the house, you will notice come dark spots on the walls only when it rains. The problem with letting the problem s\persist is that the water causes wear to the walls.
Presence of water is the big issue for penetrating and other forms of damp. Water is not friendly to certain building elements such as timber. Constant presence of moisture on timber leads to decay. If you have timber as a structural element on the walls or ceiling, the integrity of your house might be severely compromised leading to a collapse. Water damage can also affect the masonry over a long time.
